Global Graphics (Brussels:GLOG) recently announced an embedded partner program for printer/MFP manufacturers. The program is allows partners to evaluate Global Graphics Harlequin PLUS Embedded SDK on multiple evaluation platforms. Global Graphics ported their SDK to a number of different platforms to make it easier for manufacturers to evaluate and conduct early testing of our technology.

One of the benefits of the new Partner program is that printer manufacturers will receive technical information and support, which will allow them to understand how to integrate their own technology with Global Graphics’ technology through a robust set of APIs. If printer manufacturers prefer to do most of the integration themselves and require little support from Global Graphics, source code can be made available. These highly-flexible APIs allow for easy integration of OEM or third-party technology, including color management, font handling, screening or compression/decompression technology.

Support for PCL 5c, 5e and XL will now be added to the new version of the Harlequin PLUS Embedded SDK, which already provides native support for PostScript, PDF and XPS across a wide range of embedded controller architectures and operating systems. Native processing of a Page Description Language, without conversion to another format, results in increased print fidelity and performance.

The Harlequin PLUS Embedded SDK is a compact and efficient software kernel with a modular architecture that enables small footprint and low memory operation. These characteristics, combined with highly configurable support for multiple PDL formats and sophisticated graphics and color handling routines, present a software solution that is suitable for a wide range of devices and whose extensive configuration options facilitate integration with an OEM’s printer controller software.

Renesas is holding a design contest for its HEW Target Server. The HEW Target Server, a Windows® COM object, provides an interface from Microsoft Visual Studio into HEW, the powerful, easy-to-use Renesas development environment for embedded systems. It lets you control HEW or a target platform through standard Renesas debugger interfaces. With just a little programming, you can implement a Windows interface to your board (design) or to the HEW IDE. With HTS, you can build a virtual control panel, create a MicroTerminal, and implement a myriad of other ideas.

To enter the design contest, you need to design a Windows® application using the HEW Target Server. The application can be anything (such as a helper tool or automation program) and hardware design isn’t required. Winners of the contest will receive cash prizes, with over $15,000 to be awarded as follows:

First prize: $5,000 and a trip to the October 2008 Renesas Developers Conference in San Diego, California

Second prize: $3,000

Third prize: $2,000

Five Honorable Mention prizes: $1,000

In addition, if qualified, you can receive a free demo kit designed specifically for HTS. The limited-edition HEW Target Server Demonstration kit was created for the HEW Target Server Design Contest 2008. The kit provides HTS examples for both target MCU and Windows. All Windows code comes in both C++ and VisualBasic. To help get you started, copies of Microsoft’s VisualStudio Express for C++ and VisualBasic are included. The HEW Target Server Demonstration kit contains:

Target board with M16C/26A MCU, 1MB EEPROM, audio amp and jack, built-in debug circuitry, and user interface

HEW 4.1 (development IDE) with HEW Target Server Technology

Quick Start Guide

CD with HEW Target Server examples

Microsoft VisualStudio Express C++ edition CD

Microsoft VisualStudio Express VB edition CD

USB Cable

The contest is open to participants over 18 years of age. The deadline for entries is July 4, 2008.

SpaceDev has been issued a United States patent for its hybrid propulsion technology. The U.S. Patent Office issued U.S. Patent No. 7,069,717, entitled “Hybrid Propulsion System,” to SpaceDev for technology related to fine altitude and control systems on a spacecraft. The patented Hybrid Propulsion System provides increased control of thruster minimum impulse over conventional systems while simultaneously reducing oxidizer waste. This translates to reduced costs and higher efficiency for SpaceDev’s systems. According to the patent, liquid oxidizer from a main motor is used in a gas thruster by converting the liquid oxidizer to a gas state. This ensures that gas, rather than liquid, is delivered to the thruster.

The technology behind the patent was developed and funded by SpaceDev. SpaceDev creates and sells affordable and innovative space products and solutions to government and commercial enterprises. SpaceDev’s innovations include the design, manufacture, marketing and operation of sophisticated micro- and nano-satellites, hybrid rocket-based orbital Maneuvering and orbital Transfer Vehicles as well as sub-orbital and orbital hybrid rocket-based propulsion systems for safe human space flight.

Motorola will acquire Broadbus Technologies, a provider of technology solutions for Television On-Demand (TOD®). Broadbus’s solutions enable the distribution of on-demand content to consumers through multiple devices. The company’s solid-state server architecture is based on the intelligent configuration and management of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). As a result, the platform can use less space and power than traditional hard-disk based technology, while providing performance, reliability and scalability improvements for video ingest, streaming, and storage.

With the acquisition, Motorola will extend its robust video delivery platform with new content management and distribution capabilities that address growing market opportunities such as mobile video, video on-demand (VOD), time-shifted TV, network-based digital video recording (nDVR), on-demand ad insertion (ODAI) and switched digital video (SDV).
