Electronic Design Automation Increased by 4.9% in Q3 2012

According to the EDA Consortium (EDAC) Market Statistics Service (MSS), the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry revenue increased 4.9% in the third quarter of 2012. Revenues grew to $1619.9 million, compared to $1543.9 million in Q3 2011. Sequential EDA revenue for Q3 2012 increased 1.7% compared to Q2 2012. The four-quarters moving average increased by 8.8%. Companies that were tracked employed 28,877 professionals in Q3 2012, which is an increase of 6.3% compared to the 27,162 people employed in Q3 2011, and up 2.4% compared to Q2 2012.

Revenue by Product Category

Computer Aided Engineering (CAE)
Revenue increased 11.6% to $632.5 million in Q3 2012 (compared to Q3 2011). The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 11%.

IC Physical Design & Verification
This category saw revenue decreased to $326.7 million in Q3 2012 (a 3.4% decline compared to Q3 2011). The four-quarters moving average increased 12.2%.

Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module (PCB & MCM)
Revenue grew by 9% to $153.0 million (compared to Q3 2011). The four-quarters moving average for PCB & MCM decreased by 1.7%.

Semiconductor Intellectual Property (SIP)
Compared to Q3 2011, revenue increased by 3.2% to $423.0 million. The four-quarters moving average increased 9%.

Services
Revenue totaled $84.7 million in Q3 2012, which is a 4.6% decrease compared to Q3 2011. The four-quarters moving average decreased by 0.8%.

Revenue by Region

The Americas
This region generated $715.7 million of EDA products and services in Q3 2012, which is an increase of 1.3% compared to Q3 2011. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 9.3%.

Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA)
Revenue increased by 3.8% to $267.5 million in Q3 2012 compared to Q3 2011. The EMEA four-quarters moving average increased 7.7%.

Japan
This region declined to $243.9 million, which is a 5.1% decrease compared to Q3 2011. The four-quarters moving average for Japan decreased 6.6%.

The Asia/Pacific (APAC)
Third quarter 2012 revenue grew to $392.8 million in Q3 2012, which is an increase of 21.8% compared to the third quarter in 2011. The four-quarters moving average increased 21.9%.
