Semiconductor Chip Sales - May 2008

Posted by Ken Cheung in Research on Thursday, July 10, 2008

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), worldwide sales of semiconductors were $21.8 billion in May, an increase of 7.5% higher than the $20.3 billion for May 2007. May sales were 2.8% higher than the $21.2 billion reported for April 2008. Year-to-date sales of $103.4 billion are up by 5.3% from the $98.2 billion reported for the first five months of 2007. Total semiconductor sales excluding memory products were up by 12.3% year-on-year and by 2.5% sequentially. According to the SIA, May is historically a relatively strong month for semiconductor sales.

The SIA Global Sales Report (GSR) is a three-month moving average of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, which represents approximately 66 companies. The moving average is a mathematical smoothing technique that mitigates variations due to companies' financial calendars.
