Vishay SiP21301 Linear Regulator Controller

Posted by Ken Cheung in Components on Thursday, January 3, 2008

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) created an LDO controller (SiP21301) with adjustable and fixed output voltage options that uses external n-channel MOSFETs to provide extremely low drop-out voltages of under 50 mV at very high currents, up to 7 A, with 80% efficiency. The SiP21301 device is optimized for driving n-channel MOSFETs to power FPGAs, ASICs, and ASSPs in game consoles, set-top boxes, LCD televisions, and networking equipment.

The SiP21301 works with an external n-channel MOSFET with a separate supply voltage. As a result, the LDO controller allows designers to choose the FET with the on-resistance, drop-out voltage, output current, and power dissipation ratings that best suit their applications, operating from 2.5 V down to 0.65 V at up to 7 A. The 80% efficiency of the SiP21301 solution helps to reduce energy consumption in end products while simplifying the design of dc-to-dc converters.

Features

  • Programmable Non Rush Current on Start up (NRCS)
  • Short Circuit Protection (SCP)
  • Thermal Shutdown
  • UVLO and Latch Function
  • Fixed 1.2 V and 1.5 V Output Voltage Options
  • N-Channel MOSFET driver
  • MSOP8 Package

Designed to maintain regulation while delivering 7-A peak current, the new SiP21301 is ideal for systems that have a high surge current upon turn-on and very low drop-out voltage requirements. The SiP21301 features programmable inrush current protection on start-up, short-circuit protection, thermal shutdown, and undervoltage lockouts for safe operation of the IC and the external MOSFET.

The controller offers an adjustable output voltage, as well as fixed 1.2-V and 1.5-V output voltage options. The device provides a low operating current, a low standby current, and a 1% output voltage accuracy.

The SiP21301 is available in the compact, lead (Pb)-free MSOP8 package and operates over a -40 degrees Celsius to +125 degrees Celsius junction temperature range. Samples and production quantities of the new SiP21301 LDO controller are available now, with lead times of 8 to 12 weeks for initial orders.
