Wireless Handset Application Processor Market
The world market for wireless handset application processors, which is still in the first flush of youth, will be in its prime of life for a limited time, according to a new study from ABI Research. Application processors provide wireless handsets with multimedia features, such as digital imaging, mobile audio and ringtones, TV quality video, gaming, global positioning system (GPS), wireless LAN, and mobile digital TV. This market, driven by the global explosion in smartphones and other high-end portable devices, has grown rapidly from small beginnings. In 2007, application processor revenue is expected to be nearly $4 billion, with unit shipments at nearly 298 million. But within two years, two factors will begin to exert downward pressure.

Sigma Selects Analog Devices’ Blackfin for 14 Megapixel Digital Camera
Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI) announced that Sigma Corporation selected Analog Devices’ Blackfin(R) processor for its SD14 digital single lens reflex (SLR) camera. Powered by the unique direct-image capabilities of the Foveon X3 sensor and a Blackfin ADSP-BF561 processor, the SD14 can reproduce high-definition images rich in gradation and three-dimensional detail, because the SD14 directly captures red, green and blue data for every pixel in an image, without loss or distortion.
ST Creates Touch Sensor for Cost-Sensitive, Portable Applications
STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) announced a new family of ultra-low-power touch-sensor chips, following the signing of a technology-licensing agreement with the Korean company ATLab, Inc. The sensors are intended for portable applications such as mobile phones, PDAs, notebook PCs and media players, as well as for the cost-sensitive white-goods market. The new ‘S-Touch’ family uses ATLab’s capacitive touch-sensing technology, which is based on a fully-digital architecture that needs no on-chip MCU, memory or firmware to implement control interfaces responsive to their users’ touch. The first products in the family are 8-channel and 12-channel devices.
