The release also includes new drivers that support the latest programmable logic controllers (PLCs) as well as several usability improvements.

TI to High-k Value Material Within Transistors in 45nm Chips
Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE:TXN) (TI) announced plans to integrate a “high-k” value material within the transistors in its most advanced, high performance 45-nanometer (nm) chip products. For years, high-k dielectrics have been under consideration to address leakage, or power drain, which has become increasingly problematic as transistor dimensions continue to shrink. Through its approach, TI will reduce leakage by more than 30 times per unit area as compared with commonly used silicon oxide (SiO2) gate dielectrics. In addition, TI’s high-k choice offers the compatibility, reliability and scalability to continue delivery of high volume, high performance and low power semiconductor solutions through the 45-nm and 32-nm process nodes.

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), one of the world’s leading semiconductor manufacturers, unveiled details of its 45nm(0.045-micron) CMOS design platform for next-generation System-on-Chip (SoC) product development for low-power, wireless and portable consumer applications.

Renesas Debuts 32-bit CISC Microcontrollers with On-Chip FPU
Renesas Technology America, Inc. announced two R32C/118 group microcontrollers (MCUs) with 512KB on-chip flash memory that expand the 32-bit R32C/100 series at the top of the popular M16C family. The new devices incorporate the R32C/100 high-performance 32-bit CISC CPU core, which runs at speeds up to 48MHz. They also have a floating point unit (FPU) capability and support critical functions of manufacturing processing applications, such as process flow control, pressure and temperature control, and analytical metering operation.

Based on an Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo LV (low voltage) processor operating at up to 1.66 GHz, the CR5 is designed for a broad range of applications, with a conduction-cooled option making it especially appropriate for military applications in harsh environments. The CR5 supports up to 2 GBytes of DDR2 SDRAM with ECC on a 400 MHz memory bus, and features two Gigabit Ethernet ports, two SATA ports, two USB 2.0 ports and eight GPIO ports.
