Understanding Light Sensors

Posted by Ken Cheung in Components on Friday, July 28, 2006

Planet Analog has an article about light sensors. As light sensors become more common and less expensive, understanding their fit with the application is increasingly important. The use of integrated circuitry enables on-chip calibration, filtering and increased resolution.

The article looks at the array of available light sensors, covering trade-offs in resolution, dynamic range and cost. The use of integrated circuitry with light sensors enables on-chip calibration, filtering and increased resolution. These advances are discussed with respect to two applications: an ambient-light sensor for a laptop and one for a cell phone display.
