Embedded.com revealed the results of their survey of embedded systems developers. They plan to present the results over several installments. The first installment is about operating systems. Below are some highlights of their findings.

Breakdown of OS

  • commercial os 36.3%
  • no os 28.7%
  • developed internally 15.1%
  • open source 11.5%
  • commercially distributed 8.4%

Segments Skipping OS

  • consumer electronics 40%
  • automotive 36%
  • industrial 35%
  • computer peripherals 16%

Linux Appeal

  1. low cost 70%
  2. adaptability and extensibility 61%
  3. avoids the commercial alternatives (don't have data)
  4. personal control 45%
  5. performance 39%

OS Evaluation Criteria

  1. real-time performance
  2. processor compatibility
  3. availability of software tools
  4. royalty fees
  5. purchase price

Commercial RTOS Ranking

  1. Wind River's VxWorks
  2. Windows XP for Embedded
  3. Windows CE
  4. Texas Instruments' DSP/BIOS
  5. Red Hat's Linux
